A golden moment for her

Two gold medals - one each in 1500 metre and 3000 metre - at the National Youth Athletics Championship in Bangalore recently, were a reward for L. Suriya's persistent hard work.

The 17-year-old's effort also helped Tamil Nadu clinch the girls' team title at the meet.

Suriya has been a consistent performer at various levels for quite a while now and the 5000 m gold along with silver in 3000 m at the Junior National Athletics Championship last year is an enough proof.

Trained by her father, S. Loganathan, the Pudukottai girl has set her sight on the Federation Cup Junior Athletics Championship to be held in Madurai in July.

"Long distance running is very demanding and it requires a lot of stamina. Suriya runs for nearly 10 km a day apart from regular workouts," says Mr. Loganathan.

About his daughter's achievement at the Bangalore meet, he says the youngster came up with a good performance and is eager to continue the good show at the Madurai championship.

The president of the Kavinadu Youth Sports Club, P.V.R. Sekaran, the president of the Pudukottai District Athletic Association, M. Liyakath, and the secretary, I. Jehangir, greeted her.
